The first major update for 4J Studios' XBLA release, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, is now live. Some new features are added to the game, but this is not the previously hinted at update that will bring the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft in line with v1.7.3 of the PC version. So no, you can't use pistons yet and you still can't stack fences, among other things.

For serious Minecrafters, the most welcome of the update's changes is probably the addition of X/Y/Z coordinates to the world map that every player starts with in his or her inventory. It's not quite as simple as being able to hit F3 for the same info in the PC version since you're required to use an always-valuable inventory slot to cart around the map, but it's an elegant solution for adding a coordinates display to the console game.

Also new is the ability to change the timing on autosaves, from 15 minutes to two hours, in 15 minute increments. Nothing else that's new really changes how the game plays. You can turn hints and tool tips off now, a nice addition for Minecraft veterans. There are also new How To Play sections covering multiplayer, screenshot sharing, and new features.

The update introduces a bunch of fixes as well, including a very disappointing one that corrects an item duplication glitch involving the game's furnace and dispenser. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has no Creative Mode, but a duping glitch like that one at least offered players the freedom to build as they'd like. I'd call 4J's decision to remove that glitch a major miscalculation. I think any fan will agree that the developer should be putting its efforts into improving the overall experience and not limiting the freedom that the players have to create, even if that freedom springs forth from an unintended bug.

Just my two cents. Hopefully there are great things to come for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition in the future. PC fans know very well how amazing the game is, especially in more recent, post-Adventure Update versions. The console release isn't there yet, but hope springs eternal that it one day will be.

Here's the full rundown of features and fixes for the new patch:

Features:

Added an autosave, and the ability to turn autosave off, or set it from 15 minutes up to 2 hours in 15 minute steps.
Split the sensitivity controls into an in-game sensitivity and an in-menu sensitivity.
Added an Interface Opacity slider in the settings for plasma screen users.
Added a gamertag display in splitscreen, and the ability to enable/disable it in the settings.
Added an option in the settings menu to enable/disable in-game hints.
Added an option in the settings menu to enable/disable tooltips.
Added a co-ordinate display to the in-game map.
Added new sections in the How To Play on Multiplayer, Sharing Screenshots, and What's New.
Added a warning message when attempting to place lava near the spawn area.

Fix for the leaderboard crash when toggling between filters/leaderboards.
Fix for server disconnect message appearing when offline or in leaderboards.
Fix for issue where posting a screenshot to Facebook caused a back out to the main menu.

Good to hear, hopefully they'll get it as close to the PC version as possible. I'm not sure if it's possible with the 360s limitations.

Just in case no one knows this yet you are able to stack fences. Use two stacks of dirt (as high as you want) and stand on one (not the one you want the stacked fence on) place fence on the other dirt and dig down one and remove the dirt that the first fence post is on. Repeat process to the ground (or not if you want it in some other way) i found this out via Youtube. I use this often to create pens for animals, among other things.

Nice find, hopefully they don't patch it. They've done that before.
